Dr. Eric Avery, 2018-2019 ETSU Basler Chair of Excellence contacted me to see if I could create a dance performance for his art exhibit, Epidemic (Dr. Eric Avery & Adam DelMarcelle). Dr. Avery's art highlights his work as a psychiatrist and addresses the AIDS epidemic; DelMarcelle's artwork focuses on opioid addiction. Their pieces were incredibly inspiring, and I developed a contemporary dance with my Dance Composition class interpreting their visual art through movement. Students performed the dance for the public on two occasions, at the Reece Museum and again in the Bud Frank Theatre.
I asked Theatre & Dance student, Taylor Hutchison to film and edit together the two performances. Check out the film below:
Lighting Design: Melissa Shafer
Costume Design: Jonathon Taylor
Technical Director: Zach Olsen
Costume Shop Supervisor: Beth Skinner
Many wonderful students in Lighting Design, Costume Design, Stagecraft, and Dance Composition were involved in varying capacities in the development of the performance.
I also shot and edited a short film of my sensory response to the powerful images in the exhibit.
